Two of my friends Rhianon and Erika are either in (Rhianon) or on their way to (Erika) Afghanistan. They are both volunteering at the incredibly altruistic skate project Skateistan located in Kabul. Since 2008 the project has focused on teaching girls and boys to skateboard and as a result forge bonds that stretch beyond social barriers.
It’s a pretty amazing that skateboarding has found roots in such a war torn country. The fact that skateboarding can find a place there reinforces the idea that skateboarding is a universal language and enjoyed world wide.
A trailer for the documentary about Skateistan has just been released.

The film will be making the rounds of film festivals this fall and if your looking for some adventure Skateistan is always looking for volunteers.
